Volkswagen I.D. R Sports Electric Car Will Take Part In Pikes Peak

Last fall, the German automaker Volkswagen announced the development of an all-wheel drive electric car to participate in the most famous Pikes Peak mountain race. Today the company published the first photos of the electric prototype, and also announced its name – Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak.

Note that this model will be the first sport prototype of the I.D. family, which indicates the manufacturer’s intention to develop a family of electric vehicles not only in the direction of user models. Representatives of Volkswagen told that participation in the legendary mountain race isn’t only symbolic, it’s also an excellent opportunity to test the car for further improvement of the electromobile range.

Naturally, the team is also counted with Volkswagen I.D. R beat the current record in the class of electrical prototypes, which was beat in 2016 at the mark of 8 minutes and 57.118 seconds by New Zealand pilot Rhys Millen with model e0 PP100. The next race will be held in the US, Colorado, on June 24, 2018.

Recall that the international race of racing cars Pikes Peak (Pikes Peak International Hill Climb), also known among fans as the “Race to the clouds”, is held since 1916 in the Rocky Mountains near Colorado Springs city. The length of the route is 11.8 miles, the height difference is 4593 feets, the finish line is at the level of 14107,6 feets above sea level.

Volkswagen Motorsport team participated three times in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race. In the period from 1985 to 1987 Klaus-Joachim Kleint climbed the hill at the wheel of an unusual Volkswagen Golf with two engines with a capacity of 652 hp. The best result was the third place in 1985, with each time the racer of the factory team was close to victory, but still missed it.
